New Shockwave Peri-Actor Transmitters

4/26/2016

We have added four new myofascial transmitters to our Shockwave therapy treatments. Peri-Actor fascial heads can penetrate deep into tissues not reached by traditional methods.

Fascia can be viewed as a sack throughout the body that encapsulates and compartantisizes tissue such as muscle. Recent theory focuses the important role of mobility, function and pain and consequently imbalances within the myofascial tissues.

What is Fascial tissue? If  you look at a piece of meat and see that thin fibrous translucent fibrous surrounding tissue - that's fascia.

Myofascial treatments are often typically done by hand or with instrument assisted hand tools.  These methods are known to be beneficial but may not reach the depth or have the effectiveness of mechanical tools such as Shockwave.

Practitioners at Healthview often combine contemporary fascial protocols with Shockwave head combinations. Shockwave treatment is a popular choice as an adjunctive modality with our clinicians.

If you have questions contact us or ask one of our providers for information.

Acupuncture in Combination with Shockwave

Acupuncture in Combination with Shockwave
Acupuncture uses filiform needles that have rounded ends and resemble a thread or filament. These are different from hypodermic needles which are sharper and designed to cut tissue. Acupuncture can be practiced in a traditional manner (Chinese medicine) or is utilized in modern evidence based fashion. In some instances both methods may be employed and the treatment combined with various treatment methods from electrical modalities, soft tissue therapies, and exercise.

Patients have varied responses to acupuncture treatments and some good evidence exists demonstrating its effectiveness when acupuncture is used appropriately. Ask your provider if you are a candidate for this treatment method. The practitioners at Healthview use acupuncture as an adjunctive component in a comprehensive treatment plan.

Acupuncture treatment at Healthview is generally used within the medical model with a focus on managing pain and promoting the healing of damaged tissue. In addition, electro-acupuncture is often utilized to enhance the effect of the treatment.

Spine-Actor Heads are Here

11/3/2015

New Spine-Actor heads are fork shaped and come in three sizes for different parts of the spine. This transmitter can be used as a stand alone treatment but is more commonly incorporated into a more complete therapy session. Treatment is primarily used with patients who are sub-acute or chronic.

The simple explanation is that it helps mobilize tissue and stimulate normal physiological behaviour. In theory, the therapy will assist in healing and improve soft tissue properties and in turn, function. The treatment sessions are measured relative to the clinical responses of individuals.

A few things we like about shockwave therapy is that it is safe and non-invasive. In addition, we can determine if this therapy is beneficial after just a few sessions. Below is information from the Shockwave site.

From the ShockWave Site
Combined with EPAT®, fork shaped applicators / transmitters help treat spinal musculature.
These specialized EPAT® transmitters for the radial D-ACTOR handpiece optimally reach the vertebral joints of the entire spinal column in the neck, chest and lumbar areas. The muscles can be worked on paravertebrally. The contact surface of the U shape allows medical professionals to selectively reach myogeloses, tension and trigger points with EPAT®.

Ultrasound Therapy  vs Shockwave Therapy

Traditional ultrasound therapy was the go to modality for the conditions noted below for many years. Nowadays the modality of choice for our 10 practitioners is Shockwave. Our ultrasound machine sits idol most of the time and is only used on those patients who we cannot use Shockwave on, which is a very small percent.

Shockwave is especially specific for tendinopathies such as:
  • Feet - heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis
  • Elbow – tennis and golfers elbow
  • Shoulder - calcific tendinosis of rotator cuff muscles
  • Knee - patellar tendonitis
  • Hip – bursitis
  • Lower Leg - shin splints
  • Upper Leg - Iliotibial band friction syndrome
  • Back Pain - lumbar and cervical spine regions and chronic muscular pain

Our practitioners at Winnipeg Shockwave (Healthview Therapy Centre) typically prefer Shockwave over tradition ultrasound for a few reasons that include:
  • Fewer treatment sessions (less overall cost to the patient)
  • Faster return to normal activities
  • Patients often feel some immediate relief post treatment
  • Clinically we can quickly determine if this treatment option is a fit in a couple of treatment sessions

Please give us a call with your questions or book your appointment.

Rocktape

A typical shockwave treatment often includes other therapies that are all included in the shockwave session cost. Our doctors and therapists often use the shockwave modality as an adjunct with a more comprehensive treatment approach. Therapy options may include:
  • taping (elastic therapeutic tape)
  • instrument assisted soft tissue work
  • myofascial therapy
  • joint mobilization/manipulation
  • exercise/stretching
  • home program
  • ergonomic assessment
Rocktape is one of those add-ons sometimes used as part of a complete treatment. Below are a couple of examples of how we might use Rocktape as part of your treatment.
Hundreds of taping options are possible and the practitioner will apply the best possible option based on the clinical presentation.

V - Actor
Effective physiological muscle vibration therapy
Two weeks ago we added a V-actor head to our already popular shockwave machine. Our standard head is called the D-actor and both tools can be used as a stand-alone treatment or together. In addition, these tools are often used as an adjunct in a general treatment plan. Patients have been giving us extremely positive feedback since our shockwave machine arrived 7 months ago. We have done hundreds of treatments and applied over 2 million pulses to date. If you have shoulder, elbow, and/or foot pain try shockwave.
